Abstract

An approach for comparing qualitative descriptions of shape of objects is presented in this paper. A similarity factor between shapes is determined as the number of operations required for transforming one shape into another. The possible transformational operations are defined by conceptual neighbourhood diagrams (CND). Our approach has been tested using images from the MPEG-7 CE-Shape-1 library and results show that our similarity calculus is invariant to translations, rotations and dilations and that the values obtained are coherent from the point of view of human perception.
