System dependence on channel and direct access device architecture was addressed with the introduction of System/370. Discussed are the alternatives to this problem and their evaluation by a channel architecture program simulator. Also presented is the solution, a block multiplexer channel and sector addressing in devices, which resulted in more efficient channel utilization and reduced programming overhead.
