Abstract

A Decision Support System (DSS) for the planning of soil conservation systems on a watershed scale is described and applied to an agricultural watershed in southwestern Quebec. The system integrates Geographical Information Systems (GIS), distributed modeling, and Expert System (ES) technologies. A map of appropriate soil conservation practices was produced for the study region. The conservation practices selected by the expert system reduced the sediment yield and average erosion rate of the basin by 50%, using a 247 mm design rain storm.
