Abstract

Cattle in a computerised feedlot are identified electronically and their individual feed intakes are measured. The identification system uses individually encoded transponders slung on collars around each animal's neck. The feeding system is controlled by a small personal computer and operates continuously. The computer controls air-rams which move flaps to dispense fresh pelleted feed to the animal and to remove uneaten food. Feed offered and feed waste is weighted, and all feeding data is recorded by the computer.
