In this paper, we present an adaptive handover method with application-awareness for multimedia streaming service in wireless local area networks. Traditionally, the handover method in wireless local area network did not take into account the characteristics of the application service. Thus, the severe service disruption may occur during the movement of mobile node. In order to prevent the degradation of the applications service, the scanning period and the number of channels per scanning for handover are dynamically adapted to the type of applications and wireless networking environment. The performance of the proposed adaptive handover mechanism has been evaluated by simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism the proposed mechanism can prevent service quality degradation and provide session connectivity.
