Abstract

The wireless personal area network (WPAN) is an emerging wireless technology for future short range indoor and outdoor multimedia applications. The IEEE 802.15.3 medium access control (MAC) is proposed, specially, for short range high data rates applications, to coordinate the access to the wireless medium among the competing devices. In this paper, we analyze the causes for underutilization of WPAN (IEEE 802.15.3) MAC channel capacity and propose some novel schemes to improve channel capacity from an application designer's point of view. Finally, we come up with some important research issues to further investigate the improvements in the WPAN MAC.
