Abstract

The PON and mobile convergence networks is a promising architecture for future access networks to offer seamless services and enhanced experience to users. PON is a wired access technology which is expected to provide a cheap solution to broadband access. Wireless technologies have low deployment costs and mobility. A convergence of PON and wireless could be an attractive solution to broadband network access, which enables the two technologies to complement each other. In this article, we propose a PON and mobile convergence architecture and a new mobility management scheme to provide mobile users with quality-of-service for bandwidth-intensive multimedia applications. Moreover, we propose an Advanced-PON system which is able to support intercommunication among ONU. That is, traffic from one ONU can be delivered to all or some ONUs within the same system via a bypass, without going through the OLT. It leads to enhanced network efficiency and service quality with fast handoff transmission.
