Network-based synchronous collaborative design is one of the important research fields of computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW). This paper analyzes the implementation ways of synchronous collaborative design and studies the realization method of sharing object-oriented collaborative awareness. According to the needs of collaborative product modeling and real-time data transferring and considering the characters of XML such as independence on platform, database and application, and good ability of metadata description, query and dynamic update, an XML-based collaborative information exchange method is proposed to realize the collaborative awareness and data exchange. This method reduces the data flow of network transmission and reserves design history, which is convenient for design re-building and comprehending among designers.
