This paper presents a system suitable for controlling access to specific areas, (e.g. authorized people accessing restricted areas). The system consists of a number of RFID readers, which relay information obtained from passive RFID tags to the access control software. These readers can be connected to normal PC computers, or to Linux based OpenWRT devices. The requirements and capabilities of the system are shown. The structure of the middleware, which is used to pass relevant information to a centralized user interface allowing human observation and intervention, is demonstrated. Furthermore, possibilities for integrating the system into a multi-sensor surveillance network is discussed.
