Abstract

We describe a novel course offered as part of a one semester travel-study program. The course, taught by a computer science faculty member and entitled Technology and European Society, serves to introduce general students to social, historical and ethical issues in technology. The goals for the students included gaining a larger appreciation for technology, its historical development and its impact on society; examining ethical issues in technology; gaining insight into technology and social issues such as gender; and examining the global impact of technology. One key location was Bletchley Park in England, where Alan Turing and others worked to break Enigma and other Axis codes during World War II. We provide details on the curriculum and give results from course evaluations. The end result was an experience that was extremely rewarding and enriching for students and faculty alike.
