A database project that reinforces course concepts directly can serve as a starting point for students' discovery of syntax variations among dialects of SQL. This paper describes a semester-long project that mirrors course topics as they are covered during the term, and reports student experience with discovering the differences between two open source relational database management systems. The student experience points to the need for future lab assignments that more deliberately expose students to this discovery.
