Abstract

In this paper five different image filtering algorithms are compared based on their ability to reconstruct the images affected by noise. The purpose of these algorithms is to remove different type of noise that might occur during transmission of image or capturing an image. The Spatial Median Filter is compared with current image smoothing techniques. Experimental results demonstrate that the Spatial Median Filter method is giving desirable results when compared to other filters. A modification to this algorithm is introduced by Church, J.C., Yixin Chen, achieve more accurate reconstructions of underwater images with suppressing of Gaussian noise over other popular techniques and the results are compared by two parameter evaluation namely Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Mean Square Error (MSE).
