For packet-based wireless WiMAX network, layer-based design is a simple but effective structure, while to obtain high system performance on unstable and dynamic changes of wireless channel condition, loosely-coupled cross-layer is a more effective method. In this paper, through analyzing and constructing the practical channel model, channel-aware adaptive packet size algorithm for maximized resource utility (APS_MRU) based on cross-layer design-- combining adaptive modulation at physical with automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol at MAC layer is proposed. And the closed-form solution is expressed. Numerical results show that dynamic packet size according to timevarying channel and MCS improve the data rate and resource utility in each round.
