This paper addresses two issues about spectrum sensing in heterogenous wireless networks (HWNs). One is the optimization of spectrum sensing periods. The other is the efficient scheduling between sensing periods and transmission periods. The optimal programming to maximize the achievable throughput for the unlicensed users with licensed users sufficiently protected is used to get the solution for the first issue. The second order statistic characteristics of fading channels and the outage capacity constraint of secondary users are jointly used to get the optimal solution for the second issue. The results turn out to be efficient for spectrum utilization and time scheduling.
