Abstract

In this paper, a directional antennas-based topology control algorithm is proposed. It's designed for the upper tier of a two-tiered wireless sensor network, but also could be introduced to other scenarios. The upper tier consists of a base station (BS) and several application nodes (ANs). The location of BS is adjusted adaptively according to the directions of arrived messages from ANs and data rate. Inter-AN relays are arranged, with neither position information nor detail directional information from its neighbors. The coverage of each AN is divided into several sections. Once there's at least one neighbor in each section, the AN will be able to forward local-view to BS successfully. Also a set of optimizations that further simplify network topology and reduce power consumption is proposed. There is a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm.
