Abstract

Here we introduce a new cocept of decoding, Minimum Transition Hybrid Register Exchnge Method (MTHREM) for implementation of Viterbi Decoder. There are two well known methods for survivor path storage and decoding, the Traceback(TB) and Register Exchange Method (REM). The REM is logically simple, but it will consume large power and area, due to huge switching activity. The problem of switching activity of viterbi decoder can be reduced by combining TB and REM, that is Hybrid Register Exchange Method (HREM). Further reduction in switching activity is possible by avoiding the unwanted transition of data bits from one register to other, by using free distance property or error correcting capability of viterbi decoder. This technique is used in proposed method. So, MTHREM has low switching activity by reducing the data transfer operations. Simulation results is presented using Modelsim to prove the method.
