This tutorial provides an introduction to the basic concepts of software product line engineering: business orientation, variability management, architecture-driven development, and the two-lifecycle approach. Based on this introduction the Families Evaluation Framework (FEF) is described. This is a systematic approach to evaluating a product line organization and its development approach. The material in this tutorial also provides the basis for the tutorial on inner source software product lines.
