As the UML reaches the venerable age of four, both its proponents and critics are scanning the changes in the UML 1.3 revision and the proposed UML 2.0 roadmap. They are asking pointed questions, such as: Has the modeling language matured or bloated during the standardization process? Will UML be able to adapt to the changing requirements of software development? These questions and the strong emphasis of the UML Revision Task Force's final report on architectural issues suggest that UML is approaching an architectural crossroads at the OMG and elsewhere. This panel explores the nature and the extent of the architectural challenges facing UML, and makes constructive recommendations to address them.
