Abstract

Flooding has been used in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) because it is the simplest method for broadcasting messages over the entire networks. Several reliable and energy-efficient flooding mechanisms were developed in recent years. However, they still have some trade-offs between transmission reliability and energy-efficiency in the flooding messages. In addition, there is no appropriate flooding mechanism which considers dynamic topology changes and mobile characteristics of MANETs. In this paper, we propose an ASTRAL, which is an adaptive, efficient, and reliable flooding mechanism for MANETs. ASTRAL consists of the FPR and BPR (Forward and Backward Packet Recovery) methods for achieving more robust and reliable message flooding. In addition, ASTRAL dynamically adjusts the rate of compensation packets and request packets according to the nodes' distribution and movement.
