Abstract

Induction motors contribute to a considerable part in the existing loading of the power system. Large starting current requirements of these machines leads to severe voltage sags in the power distribution network thereby adversely affecting the quality of power supplied to sensitive industrial and residential loads. This paper presents static transfer switch based solution to improve power quality of sensitive equipments. A sample distribution network, feeding both induction motors as well as sensitive loads is considered and the performance of static transfer switch system is analyzed for protection of sensitive loads against the voltage sags caused in the system during starting of induction motors.
