Abstract

With increasing fragmentation of the content ecosystem, content providers and consumers are facing new challenges in audience and content discovery respectively. Social bookmarking services have successfully tackled these problems online -- but have failed to translate to mainstream video delivery channels like television given concerns around rights management, usability, ubiquity and adaptability to diverse client platforms. In this paper we focus on a mobile-centric solution that resolves some issues in an operator- and platform- agnostic manner, thereby enabling more widespread usage of such systems for social bookmarking of TV content. We describe the design and implementation of an early prototype and share insights from a small-scale user study conducted with this system. A secondary goal is to motivate a broader usage of such 'companion' devices as a test-bed for research on interactive and social behaviors around video and TV content consumption.
