This article presents a face-identification system to be used in online virtual environments for teaching and learning. Its structure is based on client-server configuration that combines stages of processing facial recognition modules with a mechanism that monitors remote users via a webcam. Doing so, it legitimizes the participation of students in the educational process of teaching and learning in distance education, empowering the digital security when identifying online students in virtual environments for teaching and learning. The approach used in facial recognition contains a technique based on coefficients of the Discrete Cosine Transform.
