Extracting parameters from a received signal and auto-demodulating based on these parameters without prior information from the transmitter can be beneficial to dynamic spectrum access, cognitive radio and many other applications. Universal classifier and synchroniser (UCS) is conceived as such a self-contained system that can detect, classify and synchronise with a received signal and provide all parameters needed for physical layer demodulation. The accommodated modulations include AM, FM, FSK, MPSK, QAM and OFDM. UCS can be used in different multi-user access schemes. The designed system has been verified by a prototype using GNU Radio in Linux plus a Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP), as well as other software defined radio platforms. Performance for key components and the entire system has been evaluated by theoretical analysis, over the air experiments and computer simulations.
