Assessing and quantifying the effect of fundamental propagation mechanisms is essential for the accurate design and planning of wireless networks in metropolitan areas. In this paper, the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to investigate basic propagation mechanisms in simplified urban environments. In particular, we study propagation effects for WiMAX signals in the presence of simple obstacles. We compare FDTD results with empirical model ITU-R P.526-10, which considers only the effect of diffraction. Our goal is to investigate and interpret discrepancies between the empirical model and the FDTD results, which can be attributed to multiple reflection and transmission effects. To this end, we also introduce more complicated obstacles than previous studies. Our results confirm that the impact of multiple reflections becomes more dominant as the channel becomes more non-Line-Of-Sight.
