In this paper, we present an innovative ARQ approach for mobile multicast, which utilizes packet-combining to reduce the number of retransmissions. We adopt the proposed ARQ scheme jointly with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) in a cross-layer design framework to improve the average spectral efficiency per receiver under specific QoS constraints. Expressions are derived for the proposed joint ARQ-AMC schemes, which are then compared with existing multicast schemes under Rayleigh fading channels for different Signal-to-Interference-and-Noise-Ratios.
