In the knowledge economy information and knowledge turned out to be the main drivers of innovation, competitiveness and growth. Knowledge management (KM), as part of organization's strategy, supports essentially the management of its intellectual capital, and significantly accelerates the transfer of knowledge and information among individuals and teams. Therefore, companies world-wide devote time and resources to apply KM, while researchers study on bases of theory and practice of KM discuss the challenges ahead of its implementation and the major factors which could facilitate its success. Knowledge audit (KA) is an important part of any KM implementation plan, as it examines the state-of-the-art of knowledge assets, their usage and flows in the organization, as well as consider the knowledge needs for gaining advantages against competitors and achieving corporate strategic goals. At the same time, KA supports the process of monitoring and control of KM implementation providing feedback for the results achieved and the problems in place for gaining the expected KM benefits. This paper focuses on the concept of KA and its possible phases, and presents the concept of an on-line KA platform developed at Sofia University as an extension to the designed knowledge portal.
