The method to generate codewords from traditional maximum length sequences (m-sequence) in the spectral-amplitude coding(SAC) optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) network is present. When these codewords are adopted, two code keying can be used and superior spectral efficiencies can be obtained in the networks as compared to original m-sequences. In addition, since the corresponding coder can be implemented compactly by the use of commercial arrayed waveguide gratings(AWGs), these codewords are suitable for the application of OCDMA-based passive optical networks.
