Abstract

This paper presents the development of an integrated geographical information system for the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. The proposed project has been named "IITB Smart CampusGIS Grid" or IITBGrid in short. The main purpose of IITBGrid will be to offer a platform to build state-of-art geo-spatial technology based applications for managing, planning and monitoring the resources, the environment and serving the community. The Open Source GIS Software is growing in popularity within geo-informatics community. The software with a strong momentum, such as Minnesota Mapserver, GeoServer, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, GRASS GIS, and uDig, QGIS packages have begun offering a technically competitive and open-source alternative solution to the proprietary software. This project will be developed using Open Source solution to web mapping service, so the processing of data and the construction of prototype system is done using open source GIS software. This paper also discuss a module of prototype developed using open source GIS. The example is the use of keywords to search both the spatial and non spatial content. The system maps the keywords onto the database and uses the geometry to identify the spatial relations between the data. The results of the query are then ranked appropriately so that the user can visualize the results in text and map.
