Distributed multimedia systems must provide support for interaction between its components, and this can be done by using different strategies and mechanisms of communication. A possible way to define efficient communication mechanisms is to consider the location of the involved components. In this context, this paper presents a model and its implementation to provide flexible and adaptive mechanisms for communication between the components involved in a distributed multimedia data stream. The model handles in a transparent way for the application the management of QoS (Quality of Service) parameters and supports automatically for selection of communication mechanisms by considering the location of the involved components. The model also provides support for dynamic adaptation by allowing at run time the change of protocol of communication associated in order to attend the application requirements. Additionally, the paper presents some experimental results which were obtained by using an implementation of a module for the proposed model.
