The RS-485 protocol is a Modbus serial communication, mainly used by SCADA(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition). Most industrial infrastructure using this communication protocol is designed not to be exposed to an open network environment, seriously vulnerable to security threats. Therefore, this study examines key management architecture in order to suggest a key exchange algorithm suitable for the RS- 485 protocol. The suggested algorithm can support both 1:1 and 1:N communications as well as minimize the amount of loads arising from encoding/decoding so as to increase its application.
