In this paper we examine the issue of the context for pervasive systems. For this purpose we adopt a semiotic approach. After a presentation of the theoretical framework, we try to show that multimodality and viewpoints can play a key role in understanding the context. We present examples of multimodal situations which lead us to recommend to give up or at least limit a too objectivist conception of context in the designing of pervasive systems.
