Abstract

The traditional model for students' performing labs in a systems administration course is to follow precise step-by-step instructions to complete the tasks at hand. The authors have run into multiple problems using this method including students' rushing through labs with little comprehension, errors in the lab steps, and keeping the labs sufficiently up-to-date. To address these problems the authors have changed the delivery of labs such that students are now given a goal-focused task list to perform for each lab. It is hoped that this approach to the lab will increase the students' problem solving ability and comprehension of the material. To assist with the implementation of this solution, the authors have created multimedia learning objects for students to view if they cannot remember how to perform the tasks or if the instructions from the book are not understandable. Initial observations of this implementation have been quite positive in both student satisfaction and comprehension of the material.
