Abstract

Web service technology was successful in handling simple use cases of business transactions by using XML to define the application programming interface (API) in WSDL and the SOAP protocol for message exchange. However, such a technology has some fundamental problems when it is applied in the domain applications of geographic information sciences (GIScience). Both WSDL and SOAP have nothing about high performance computing, which would be a prerequisite to develop service oriented GIS. This paper identifies some fundamental research challenges to promote service oriented GIS.
