This paper includes two major works: the first is to research the feasibility of deploying network flow related applications in virtual environment of OpenVZ by evaluating the performance effect of virtualization, CPU affinity, frame length and different mechanisms of packet capture; the second is to optimize the performance of packet capture in virtual containers of OpenVZ. We try to apply PF_RING-like mechanism, a Linux kernel module for packet capture, to virtual containers of OpenVZ for the first time, add virtualization support for it and implement a new protocol family PF_PCAP that inherits merits of PF_RING and supports packet capture in virtual containers of OpenVZ. Through RFC2544, the way of measuring throughput, on 1Gbps Ethernet we measure the throughput of PF_PCAP and compare it with Libpcap. The throughput of PF_PCAP for those frames whose length is under 1024 bytes has improved 9% to 15%.
