Abstract

A new aspect in the design of future network is the energy efficiency. An energy management mechanism is proposed and evaluated for the Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON). With regard to power saving, a sleep mode operation is developed at the Optical Network Unit (ONU). Therefore, power is conserved by switch off some operating functions. The sleep period and wakeup period are computed and assigned using two alternative scheduling schemes. Simulation results show a significant power saving. Furthermore, performance study illustrates a tradeoff between energy efficiency and network performances, such as queuing delay and network bandwidth utilization.
