Abstract

Health Level 7 (HL7) continues to grow as the challenge of interchanging enterprise-wide healthcare data between heterogeneous systems is drawing more attention. However, many regional healthcare providers are still facing challenges in sharing data due to the different data structures, types, and definitions. This creates the need for a uniform data access framework to ensure portability between data coming from different providers. XML is a possible fit for this need as it allows developers to create their own data descriptions in a structured format. The goal of this project was to develop a software tool to facilitate electronic data interchange between healthcare providers by using XML as an intermediary between HL7 and healthcare databases.
