Abstract

The paper presents a lightweight distributed architecture with Call Admission Control (CAC) for Real time traffic flows. The architecture also supports Multilevel Priority and Preemption (MLPP). The CAC initially admits all new real time flows into the network for a period that is long enough to calculate the resulting link bandwidth of a new real time flow. When a preconfigured link bandwidth threshold is exceeded, the CAC performs successive pre-emption of the lowest priority, latest arrived real time flows. When the CAC is used with 802.11 WLAN based adhoc networks, a load estimation function is used to monitor the bandwidth from the shared radio medium. Although originally geared towards ad-hoc networks, the architecture can also be used to support a lightweight CAC in Diffserv-based point-to-point networks.
