Abstract

Advanced Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are de facto, the practical standards for interfaces in most decision making and decision making support systems. Consequently, the need to integrate GIS technologies with hi level information fusion (IF) appears obvious. Environment strongly affects the full range of tactical situation parameters and in some cases geo-data is the key factor in certain decision making situations. This paper proposes an approach to analyzing theoretical problems derived from GIS based Situation Awareness (SAW) solutions. It will also show that for this purpose it is necessary first and foremost to utilize two ontologies GIS and SAW together, to develop a technology that will derive practical results. The paper is also suggests a SAW case study for resolving maritime search situations using a GIS basis.
