Abstract

HCI with the multi-touch panel is seen as an alternative to the legacy mouse. The multi-touch table is a common application with the multi-touch panel, and the FITR (Frustrated Total Internal Reflection), DI (Diffused Illumination), and DSI (Diffused Surface Illumination) are useful techniques to develop the table. These techniques allow users to touch and drag for pointing and moving (or drawing) operation respectively. On the other hand, pen tablet devices with the electromagnetic induction technology provide the hover operation allowing to move objects quickly and directly, and thus it supports the drawing operation in addition to the pointing and moving operation. Echtler et al. presented a technique for detecting hover region on a FTIR multi-touch table by tracking shadows of hover region made by IR light projected from IR-LED illumination mounted on the ceiling [Echtler et al. 2008].
