Cloud computing is at a controversial point in its development. It has the potential to provide cutting edge computing services, but do we make ourselves vulnerable by committing our data to a vendor over which we have no control? If done properly, cloud computing will make our data more secure and more portable. Yet making this a truly transformative technology will require developing a set of key standards. This department is part of a special issue on cloud computing.
