Abstract

Conservation of energy has become a major concern at present. In this regard, reducing the power consumption of the Internet has also become an issue of increasing importance. This paper investigates the power consumption of an optical circuit switched network, which is expected to be the major building block of the backbone architecture of the next generation Internet. A new methodology to place IP core routers to minimize overall power consumption in this network is presented. Based on this methodology, it is observed that the cities with comparatively less switched traffic are the most suitable places to accommodate the IP core routers for this purpose.
