This paper analyzes a scheme for introducing priorities into the CSMA/CD protocol known as Ethernet. This scheme allows for the rapid transmission of important messages, even under heavy traffic conditions. The Ethernet protocol, which is widely used in industry, can be modified using existing chips and software to allow for prioritizing of packets by the scheme outlined in this paper. The scheme consists of random waiting times based upon the packets priority level and the worst case propagation delay (or slot-time). The performance of the proposed protocol is studied using simulation.
