Abstract

We consider the problem of reconstructing a continuoustone (contone) image from its error-diffused halftoned version. We present an iterative nonlinear algorithm for this problem, and show simulation results that compare the performance of the alorithm to that of conventional linear lowpass filtering. d e find that the new technique results in subjectively superior reconstruction. As there is a natural relationship between error diffusion and ΣΔ modulation, our reconstruction algorithm can also be applied to the decoding problem for ΣΔ modulators.
