Abstract

With the developement of 3D medical imaging, image compression becomes mandatory for the storage and transmission of medical images. We investigate, the use of a 3D wavelet transform (WT) for the compression of 3D medical images. We apply a 3D separable WT using, for each direction, a pair of Conjugate Quadrature Filters (CQF) allowing perfect reconstruction. For each level of resolution, eight subimages are obtained, and a specific coding procedure using a 3D Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is applied. The first results obtained on a 3D MRI image are presented.
