Abstract

Lattice vector quantization applied on wavelet coefficients has been recently developed [2]. In quantization applications, those lattices need to be truncated in order to limit the codebook size. In this paper, a quantization method with an elliptical truncation is presented. Conclusions are supported by a comparative study between spherical and elliptical codebooks. The elliptical scheme associated to an optimal orientation allows first to consider the neighbouring wavelet coefficients correlation, and then to credit the high ones representing edges. Those two points are partly responsible for the higher visual quality of the quantized image.
