Abstract

A new image coding algorithm that exploits the relationship between various subbands of an image is presented in this paper. This algorithm has been simulated on the monochrome Lenu image and one MIT high definition (HD) video. Uniform threshold quantizers (UTQs) and DPCM are used in the implementation of the algorithm. Using local variance for classification, we have achieved a 15% reduction in quantization noise compared to other published techniques for Lena at an average bit rate of 1.0 bpp. For the MIT HD video, this reduction was 29.1%.
