Abstract

As the amount of information in particular multimedia contents and services increases over networks, and in conjunction with the increases in the number of end user devices, it is becoming more and more inefficient for content and service providers to prepare their content in advance. An Adaptation Management Framework (AMF) has been proposed to provide a dynamic adaptation mechanism that allows Content/Service to be automatically adapted to a user's current capabilities, i.e. device and environment capabilities and their individual preferences. This work forms part of the Mobile VCE Ubiquitous Service program. In this paper, we investigate one of the major complexities involved in the design of the AMF, that is to select and combine appropriate adaptation operations as well as their concrete implementations once adaptation tasks are given. We proposed the use of a selection algorithm for selecting among multiple content Adaptation Mechanisms when multimedia content must be adapted to a user's context and device characteristics. The performance of such an algorithm is evaluated with respect to effectiveness and efficiency.
