Abstract

Since the emergence of the Ethernet-based PON technology, an increasing interest is observed regarding the issue of Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation. Several mechanisms have been proposed aiming to enhance the multiplexing techniques and the Medium Access Control protocols that have been accepted in the recent IEEE standard. In this paper we propose a new mechanism which targets strict delay bounds for real time traffic, while efficiently multiplexing multiple classes of traffic and achieving high utilization of the EPON upstream channel.
