Abstract

A novel error correcting scheme for variable length codes (VLC) with unequal error protection (UEP) over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) in wireless communication systems is proposed. The synchronization information in the VLC bit stream acquires more protection without increasing coding overhead. Simulation results exhibit considerable gains of the proposed scheme over the traditional equal error protection (EEP) scheme under a wide range of channel conditions. In the third generation mobile communication systems, multimedia data can be transmitted over wireless channels. Hence, there has been significant amount of research on multimedia, image/video transmission over wireless communication systems in recent years. However, image/video bit-streams are very sensitive to errors due to the variable length codes in the compression process. Consequently, it is necessary to employ unequal error protection techniques to protect the data.
