Abstract

A perspective on next-generation mobile services is presented. As a preliminary research work on next-generation mobile communications, we exploit what next-generation mobile services will be. Next-generation mobile services are defined as a hierarchy of services. We provide some insight into the definition, requirements and future trends of the next generation network (NGN). Also, it is shown that Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) provides the required mobility support for multimedia applications. However, the handoff procedure with SIP suffers from undesirable delay and hence packet loss in some cases, which is detrimental to applications that demand stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements.
